Hello, Bonjour, and Demat deoc'h! (that's Breton for "Hey y'all!"),We at L'Union Française are delighted to host a stellar group of young musicians from the French region of Brittany, known for its Celtic heritage, very cool (and endangered) language, and a special brand of traditional music. This event is FREE and open to any and all who wish to participate in the language exchange, the musical exchange, or just the exchange of fun and camaraderie.
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation had the lovely idea of bringing these college-aged players of Breton folk music across the pond, making a port of call at our monthly Cajun Music Jam + Table Française. Another important collaborator bridging the Atlantic for this occasion is the arts organization Villa Albertine, known for furnishing residencies and connecting artists and cultural institutions.
Friday, February 20 will be a magical moment for which we at L'Union Française are grateful to be the venue (4522 Prytania St., New Orleans). The plan is that at 4PM We'll meet and greet our guests with some Louisiana hospitality (think gumbo, jambalaya, beverages, and conviviality). At 5PM we'll start our "Table Française" where all who wish to participate can practice their French skills in a judgment-free setting and where we hope to invite some of our guests to learn a little Louisiana French-- and maybe teach us some useful expressions from their home in northeast France! Then, at 6PM, a "battle of the bands" commences with a sample of Louisiana French music staples by some of our Cajun Jam regulars followed immediately by a performance by our esteemed guests. Finally, we'll all get together and jam as one big group and see what happens! It promises to be one for the ages. If you like a list rather than prose, here's that same info more briefly:
4PM- Welcome our Breton guests with local food and drink
5PM- Table Française (Louisiana French meets Breton?)
6PM- Short performances by our local Cajun Jam musicians and our Breton guests followed immediately by a big, open jam with everybody
8PM- Party's over
We look forward to seeing everyone there. Once again, this event is FREE and open to all ages and walks of life. No French-speaking, Breton-speaking, or playing music required, but don't hesitate to try your hand at any of the above.
See you soon! À bientôt ! D'ar c'hentañ gweled!
