Join Natalia Figueroa Barroso and Daniel Nour as they share their latest works from the eclectic new anthology, Povo. Facilitated by Winnie Dunn, debut author of the highly acclaimed novel, Dirt Poor Islanders.
Australia is often referred to as The Lucky Country — a land of economic opportunity and vast natural resources. But how does this myth square up against the true experiences of culturally diverse Australians living in our nation’s most densely populated regions? In this critical dialogue, writers from the renowned Sweatshop Literacy Movement discuss their recent wave of stories which directly address the socio-economic conditions of Western Sydney.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
Daniel Nour is an Egyptian-Australian writer and journalist. His work has featured in The New York Times, SBS Voices, Meanjin, K*ll Your Darlings, Mascara Literary Review, The Big Issue and Eureka Street. In 2021 he was awarded the Affirm Press Mentorship for Sweatshop Writers and is working on his debut novel which is set for publication in 2025. Read his work at www.danielnour.com
Natalia Figueroa Barroso is a writer of Uruguayan origins who lives on Dharug Country. Natalia’s a member of Sweatshop Literacy Movement and her poems and stories have been shortlisted for the 2015 Lane Cove Literary Award and longlisted for the 2021 Newcastle Poetry Prize, the 2021 SBS Voices Emerging Writers’ Competition and the 2022 Palette Emerging Poet Prize. Natalia’s currently working on her debut novel, Hailstones Fell without Rain (2025, UQP). She posts at @ms_figueroa_barroso
ABOUT THE IN-CONVERSATION PARTNER:
Winnie Dunn is a Tongan-Australian writer from Mount Druitt. She is the general manager of Sweatshop Literacy Movement and the editor of several critically acclaimed anthologies including Sweatshop Women (2020) and Another Australia (2022). Winnie's debut novel is Dirt Poor Islanders (2024).
