Land Trust of North Alabama in partnership with the Madison Public Library presents naturalist and environmental educator Soozi Pline for our March Speaker Series program. Soozi and her husband Dan, while naturalizing their five-acre property in Limestone County, have created riparian buffer zones to mitigate the impact of agricultural runoff flowing through their property. These buffer zones are strips of vegetation planted next to the ephemeral streams running from agricultural fields above them to a feeder creek that drains into the Elk River. Planting riparian buffers has become a popular conservation practice aimed at increasing water quality and reducing pollution by intercepting sediment, pesticides, and other materials in surface runoff. These zones also serve to provide habitat and wildlife corridors in primarily agricultural areas. Soozi will share her experience developing riparian buffer zones and give detailed descriptions of the plants native to north Alabama thriving on her property.
