What is this workshop about? This workshop will introduce musicians and sound designers to the basic hardware and software tools needed to start working with spatial audio. We will discuss how to design different spatial audio systems and demo several examples of the software tools needed to drive multi-channel output. In addition to tech basics, we will discuss and demonstrate spatial audio mixing and compositional techniques. For this workshop, most of the spatial audio software tools implemented will be within Ableton Live, but many of the concepts will translate to other DAWs.
This workshop is led by Kyle Evans (aka pulseCoder). In addition to being the Artistic Director of the spatial sound collective Rolling Ryot, Kyle teaches immersive audio at the University of Texas in the Department of Arts and Entertainment Technologies.
What is Spatial Audio?
Spatial audio, sometimes referred to as surround sound, expands sound and music outside the bounds of a typical two-speaker stereo system. Spatial audio systems can be simple, such as quadraphonic with 4 speakers, or they can be very complex and experimental implementing dozens of channels of audio surrounding the listener in many positions.
This workshop was inspired by the growing interest in dadageek's QUADRANT series of quadraphonic audio performances. Catch QUADRANT v4.0 on July 27 ad dadaLab! More info here:
Are there any requirements?
Nope! This workshop is tailored for beginners and individuals new to spatial audio concepts. A basic understanding and experience with audio hardware and software technology is recommended.
Feel free to bring your laptop if you would like to follow along during the workshop, but it is not required. If you do bring a laptop, we will have some time after the workshop if you want to test out any of your own sounds on the dadaLab quadraphonic system.
