About this Event

Spanish Level 2(B)<h4>TUESDAY 19:30-21:00 for 10 weeks</h4>


Course Dates: Tuesday 8, 15, 22, 29 October; 5, 12, 19, 26 November; 3, 10 December 2024

Learning Objectives: Students taking the level 2 course should either have completed level 1, or have only a basic previous knowledge of the language. The aim of level 2 is to develop basic language skills, the culture and basic grammatical concepts and to equip them with the skills to communicate at a post-beginners level in a target language context.

Potential Topics:

1: Welcome -Asking and giving information; Masculine/femeine; Plural/singular; Conjugation of regular and irregular verbs

2: Getting to know each other more- Giving personal information; Giving opinions

3: Talking about family and friends -Giving information about someone else; Describing family members; Talking about other people, their jobs, likes and dislikes.

4: What is the weather like? - Describing places/cities and their climate; Recap of the verb estar and prepositions to talk about the location of certain places; Giving directions part 2; Make weather predictions

5: What is the hotel like? Where are you staying? - Booking a hotel; Dates, months, special arrangements; Recap of ordinal numbers for giving directions in the city and within the hotel; Describing and asking for information about the hotel, room and places to stay; Describing what something is like and saying where it is; Describing houses and places of interest

6: Adjectives - Different types of holidays and transport; Reading itineraries; Buying train/bus tickets; Enquiring about departures/arrival times; Comparing trains, hotels and things in general using the comparative and superlative

7: We are going shopping...- Numbers from 1 to 900; Different types of shopping; What you can buy and how much of it (weights and measures); Asking how much something costs; Buying clothes; Recap of colours and prices

8: Do you want to come with me? - Inviting people and refusing invitations; Giving reasons and explaining how you feel at the time; Talking about films and film types; Talking about music, concerts and emotions

9: This is my routine...- Talking about things that you do daily; Use of adverbs to express frequency; Recap of telling the time

10: Talking about yourself, your family, your friends and your life in general - Talking about what you do, the frequency and what your day is like; Talking about likes, dislikes, free time, habits and character; Course recap

Learning outcomes: Students will have developed a beginner’s vocabulary in the topic areas outlined above so that they can communicate at a basic level in the language. Students will understand basic words and phrases. Students will be able to formulate simple sentences.


FAQs

Is there a minimum age to register for a Language Centre course?

You must be a minimum of 18 years old to register for an in person course and a minimum of 16 years old to register for any on-line Language Centre course.

What are the course fees?

There are different fees depending on registration type. All course fees are payable on enrolment. --Student fee: £20.00 --Staff fee: £20.00 --General Public: £88.00

Are these courses accredited?

A Queen's Certificate will be awarded to all students who attend regularly. A minimum of 70% attendance is required for certification.

In addition any current Queen's student can apply for Degree Plus accreditation. Degree Plus enables students to gain recognition from Queen’s for completing extra-curricular work related learning alongside their degree.

How often do I attend?

Classes, which usually last 2 hours, are held weekly, as far as possible outside normal university teaching hours (e.g. late afternoon, early evening, some are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon) and run for 10 weeks starting in October, January and again in April. You will also be expected to complete homework ahead of class.

Is my registration fee transferrable?

Yes, if you feel after your first class that the level of language is too high/low, you can transfer to another class, provided that there is available space.

What's the refund policy?

All refunds before the start of the course must be requested in writing. Refunds are paid as follows:

Before (and including) 25 September– full refund

26 September to 3 October (inclusive) – 50% refund

No refunds available from 4 October (inclusive)

All requests for refunds need to be made in writing to the Language Centre Manager and must be related to reasons beyond your control and supported by written evidence. These refunds will be at the Language Centre Manager’s discretion. All refunds, where agreed, will be subject to an administrative fee of £10.00 for QUB staff and students and £40 for members of the public.
