Conquered and reconquered, united and divided, by turns revolutionary and repressive, the turbulent history of the Iberia has left traces of many different cultures under the surface of Spain. In turn this has contributed to strong regional identities in the food and wine of these countries.

At either end of the Pyrenees are regions with strong historical identities, the Basque country in the North with its brisk Txakoli wines and Catalonia in the South with wines soaked in Mediterranean sun. In the South the spirit of Andalusia finds expression in the fortified wines of Malaga and Sherry, while in the far North West the wines of Galicia enjoy a strong Atlantic influence. At its heart though Spain is best known for the dry, sun-drenched vineyards of Navarre, Castille and Leon, where Tempranillo is king and an abundance of rich reds stand witness to the arid terrain.

Tonight we will take a whistle stop tour from the Pyrenees to Seville, from fresh coastal whites to rich heady reds that fully evince the credentials of some of Europe's oldest and finest vineyards.
