About this Event
Join us for the first of three informal workshops exploring the history of the D/deaf community in Southend.
The workshops will be led by the Essex Record Office (the county archive) and local artist Damien Robinson.
We hope that they will be an opportunity to gather, discuss, and record stories of Southend's D/deaf community, at a time of national activism and change, and with the recent closure of the St Mellitus Centre on Oakhurst Road, originally set up by the RAD in 1936.
The first workshop will begin with an introduction to the project and a tour of the local studies section of the library. We will then discuss the places and spaces that have been important to the D/deaf community in Southend, looking at existing historical records and what has not - yet - been recorded.
All are welcome to attend. The workshops will be held at Southend Library at the Forum. The building has step-free access and an induction loop and BSL interpreters will be present. Please do get in touch if you have any further access requests - email [email protected].
The project is funded by an Engagement Grant from The National Archives. Find out more about the funded projects here: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/archives-sector/grants-and-funding/engagement-grants/current-and-past-projects/
