Event for the South India Natural Farmers 2025
Urgent Need:
Nearly 30% of India’s land suffers from soil degradation, causing annual losses of 5.3 billion tonnes of topsoil and nutrients worth over Rs. 20,000 crore. Groundwater over-extraction, intensive chemical use, and declining soil biodiversity have increased input costs and reduced farm profitability. Intensive chemical use has cut soil biodiversity by 60%, and increased input costs by 20–25%, reducing farm profits. In Tamil Nadu, seven-zone studies reveal that soil carbon is below 0.5%, leaving land infertile and unsuitable for crops. Natural farming can restore 10–15 tonnes of carbon per hectare, lower costs by 70–80%, increase yields by 10–20%, and improve climate resilience.
Vision and Objectives
The Summit is designed to cultivate a people-driven movement that advances agriculture that is:
- Economically viable
- Environmentally sustainable
- Socially inclusive
It seeks to raise awareness and encourage the adoption of natural and regenerative farming practices while facilitating knowledge exchange among:
- Traditional practitioners
- Research institutions
- Policymakers
The event will also highlight innovations, technologies, and startups that support sustainable agriculture. The Summit aims to strengthen linkages between Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), Farmer Interest Groups (FIGs), entrepreneurs, startups, and consumers—thereby improving market access and promoting value addition across the agricultural value chain.
Relevance to Southern India
Southern India faces challenges such as:
- Declining soil fertility
- Depleting groundwater
- Rising input costs
- Erratic rainfall
These issues are threatening smallholder farms. Natural farming restores soil health, improves biodiversity, and recycles local resources. States like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Telangana require locally adaptable solutions. The Summit provides a platform to address these issues and showcase Southern India’s potential as a model for climate-smart agriculture.
Relevance to 2025
The year 2025 is critical for India’s transition toward sustainable farming aligned with climate and biodiversity goals. Following the Prime Minister’s call to make natural farming a national movement, 2025 consolidates policies, research, and farmer-led successes. The Summit provides a timely platform to unite stakeholders, scale proven models, and drive collaboration and investment.
Highlights of the Summit
- Over 50,000 delegates
- 300 exhibition stalls
- Interactive sessions headed by eminent scientists and policymakers
- Live demonstrations
- A focus on youth and women engagement
This event will have a tremendous impact in attracting farmers and youth towards the adoption of natural farming.
National Recognition
On 7–8 August 2025, the Summit was presented to the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the Union Minister of Agriculture, who endorsed the initiative as a national movement. This endorsement emphasizes the importance and relevance of the Summit.
Pre-Summit Consultations
Six region-wise pre-summit meetings were conducted across Tamil Nadu under the leadership of distinguished personalities, including:
- Former Vice-Chancellors of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University
- Former Chief General Manager of NABARD
- Several FPO leaders
These consultations brought together diverse perspectives from farmers, policymakers, and experts, enabling a comprehensive understanding of regional needs and agro-climatic variations. Based on these deliberations, the planning and modalities of the South India Natural Farming Summit 2025 have been meticulously finalized to ensure the event effectively addresses the requirements of all regions and agro-climatic zones, making it inclusive, practical, and impactful for stakeholders nationwide.
