Join head chef instructor Kristin “Baker Bettie Hoffman to gain an in-depth understanding of basic sourdough techniques and theory.
About this Event

Each student will make their own sourdough loaf during the session. You will leave with a loaf that you shaped and baked in class along with a dough that you made in class that can be shaped and baked later in the week.


You will also leave with your own jar of Baker Bettie’s sourdough starter and the knowledge of how to care for it and continue baking with it.


IN THIS CLASS WE WILL COVER:


-What exactly is a sourdough starter?

-How to maintain your sourdough starter

-Sourdough master recipe and how to adapt it

-The process of creating a sourdough loaf from start to finish

-How to make a rustic boule (round loaf) from start to finish

-How to adapt your dough to fit your schedule

-How to create tension when shaping

-Baking methods

-How to use your sourdough discard


YOUR TICKET INCLUDES


-A 4-hour hands-on class

-All learning materials with detailed notes to take home with you

-A jar of sourdough starter of your own

-Lunch of sourdough pizza demoed in class by the chef instructor

-A dough that you made during class to take home and bake later in the week with detailed instructions on how to do this

-A loaf of bread that you shaped and baked during class


ALLERGENS & DIETARY RESTRICTIONS

All of our classes are peanut and tree nut free, however, be aware that our facility does contain peanuts and tree nuts.


All of our classes do include wheat and gluten.


Sourdough bread is naturally vegan however the pizza served for lunch is not. Let us know if you are vegan and we will have an alternative for you.


FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW DO I GET TO YOUR LOCATION?

Bettie’s Chicago is located in the River North neighborhood of downtown Chicago at 853 N Larrabee Street. This is right near the Larrabee and Chicago intersection. If you are taking public transit we are a 3-minute walk from the 66 Bus stop on Chicago Ave. We are also about a 10-minute walk from the Chicago Ave Brown Line stop.


WHERE DO I PARK?

There is metered parking available all along Larrabee street in front of our space. It is typically very easy to find a spot, however there is also a parking garage located at 811 N Larrabee if needed.


HOW MUCH BAKING SKILL DO I NEED FOR CLASS?

Unless otherwise stated in the class description, all of our classes are designed to accommodate every baking skill level. Even if you have never picked up a whisk, you are welcome to come and learn!


IS THERE AN AGE REQUIREMENT?

Most of our classes are appropriate for 16+. We do occasionally host classes geared towards younger students and this will be noted in the class title and description. Some of our classes are 21+ as they are BYOB and/or complimentary alcohol is served. This will be clearly stated in the class notes.


WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?

We prep for each class specifically for how many students are signed up. Please give us 48 hours notice if you need to cancel or change your ticket to another date. With less than 48 hours notice, tickets are non-refundable but are transferable to another student.


WILL I GET A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION?

Bettie’s Chicago is not an accredited culinary school or university. All of our classes are for personal educational purposes and are not considered professional training.


WHAT COVID PRECAUTIONS ARE YOU TAKING?

All staff at Bettie’s Chicago are fully vaccinated and keep up with any available boosters. We take care to fully sanitize all work surfaces between each class. Masking during class is up to each student’s discretion.
