Soup-er Sunday: John "Bet-a-Million" Gates, The Other Barbed Wire Baron This popular program returns to Soup-er Sundays with rarely seen images and artifacts related to Gates, the "other" Barbed Wire Baron.
At 12 p.m. on Sunday, January 12, at the Glidden Homestead, 921 W. Lincoln Highway, join Eric Krupa, the St. Charles History Museum's Collections and Exhibitions Manager, for a presentation on the cutthroat life and legacy of one of America's most brash robber barons: John Warne Gates. From humble beginnings as a failed storekeeper in West Chicago, to battling J.P. Morgan on the New York Market; the story of the world's richest barbed wire mogul was filled with brutality, scandal, and plenty of gambling.
Admission is $5 per person, free for Homestead members, and includes the program, a bowl of soup, and a house tour. Krupa returns for this popular program, bringing rarely seen images and artifacts related to Gates.
Krupa has been at the St. Charles History Museum since late 2020 and holds a Masters Degree in Library Information Science and Bachelors in History and Political Science. He has an interest in late 19th Century and 20th Century American History and can usually be found researching one topic or another over at the Museum, located at 215 E. Main Street, St. Charles.
Soup-er Sunday programs support the J.F. Glidden Homestead & Historical Center in DeKalb, a not-for-profit organization working to preserve the home and barn, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
