ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Terry Caviness is currently a freelance musician in Syracuse, New York and Rome, Italy. Mr. Caviness performs a wide variety of music from classical, pop and jazz styles. He has recently been seen with Mannheim Steamrollers, the Central Winds, Central Winds Jazz (CW JAZZ), CWJAZZ Italy, The Rev Theatre, and numerous freelance groups in Syracuse and Rome (It). Most recently Mr. Caviness performed Chorusline at the REV Theatre, and toured in Italy with the CW JAZZ Ensemble. Currently he can be seen with Central Winds at the NYSSMA State Conference, and in January on a Recital tour of Italy with his Classical trio.
Mr Caviness has performed with Symphoria, the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Utica Symphony, Schenectady Symphony, Erie Philharmonic Orchestra, the Central New York Jazz Orchestra, Central Winds, Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, Syracuse University Theatre, Syracuse Chorale, and Marcellus Chorale. He has played backed up for numerous musicians throughout his performing career including Aretha Franklin, Jerry Vale, and Patti Paige. He has given several recitals of solo music for trumpet at SUNY Oswego and Mr. Caviness has performed as featured artist with the Central New York Youth Wind Ensemble, the Baldwinsville High School Band and was soloist for the Northwestern University Contemporary Music Ensemble at New Music Chicago where he premiered the “Voyage of Columbus”. Mr. Caviness played on a recording of the brass music of Karel Husa, which was nominated for a Grammy and he performed with the Central Winds at the 2009 and 2016 Midwest Symposium.
Mr. Caviness is an adjunct professor of Music at SUNY Oswego, serving as the schools brass instructor and teaching music theory and appreciation. He has brought many guest artists to work with students, including Allen Vizzutti, The Gordon Goodwin Band, Boston Brass and The River City Brass Ensemble. He is co-founder and conductor of the Allegro Youth Wind Ensemble, and Youth Music Programs which consists of Elementary, Middle School and High School Band, Jazz and Orchestral programs made up of students from around Central New York. Mr Caviness serves as an active guest conductor, clinician and performer around the state.
Mr. Caviness is retired director of Bands at G. Ray Bodley High School, where he directed the schools Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Two Jazz Ensembles, Jazz/Rock Combo, Pep Band and Brass Ensemble. His bands traveled to competitions throughout the country, where they earned numerous awards. His ensembles consistently earned Level 6 Gold or Gold with Distinction Awards.
As a clinician Mr. Caviness has participated in clinics at The Eastman School of Music, The Crane School of Music, Ithaca College, Syracuse University, NYSSMA conference, NYSBDA conference and many county music organization professional development days. Under his direction the AllegroYouth Wind Ensemble, performed at the New York State Band Director’s Association’s State Symposium, where he also gave a clinic on community youth music. That same year Mr. Caviness presented a clinic on brass teaching techniques at the New York State School Music Associations Summer
Conference. Mr. Caviness was a guest conductor at the Susquehanna University band festival and with the Syracuse University Wind Ensemble. He has guest conducted several high school bands and select festivals around the Central New York Area. He has had multiple publications in professional Music Education journals over the years.
Mr. Caviness is also active as a music advocate. He was founder and co-chair of Artstars, which is a community support group for the arts. He also serves on the board of the Central Winds as treasurer and has served in many capacities on the board of the Oswego County Music Educators Association, including as president.
Mr. Caviness holds Music Performance and Education degrees from SUNY Fredonia, a Master of Music performance from Northwestern University and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Administration from Syracuse University.
Robert Auler is a Professor of Piano at the State University of New York (Oswego). He is an internationally renowned artist with performances on six continents. His notable career has included concerto and festival appearances, residencies, solo recitals, new music and multi-media projects, and appearances on behalf of the US State Department.
The New York Times commends Robert Auler’s playing for its “extraordinary rhythmic clarity and expression.” American Record Guide cites his “elegant tone and uncanny sense of voicing.” The CharlotteObserver writes that Auler handles “technical and virtuosic concerns with aplomb.” Auler’s playing has also been described as “beautiful” (Fanfare), “superb,” (Ann Arbor News) “stunning” (LaPorte HeraldKArgus) “firstKrate” (Cincinnati NewsKRecord), “truly electrifying” (ChampaignKUrbana NewsK Gazette) and “a knockout.” (Syracuse PostKStandard.)
Auler has won first prize in national and international piano competitions, including the Society of American Musicians and the Stravinsky Awards. Auler has performed on six continents, including performances throughout the United States, Canada, Argentina, Venezuela, Germany, Austria, Holland, France, Denmark, the Czech Republic, China, South Africa and New Zealand. Notable venues include Carnegie Hall, Teatro Colon, and Shanghai Symphony Hall.
Auler has performed in notable summer music festivals including the Aspen Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, the Monadanock Festival, the Michigan City Chamber Music Festival, the Saugatuck Chamber Music Festival, Nantucket Musical Arts Society, and Festival A Tiempo Caracas (Venezuela).
