Sssshhhh...did you hear that? What was that noise?
The outdoors at night can seem a little spooky, unless you know what all those strange thumps, rustles and buzzes are. Come play a game with us to learn some of our common wildlife sounds, then take a short ranger-led night hike.
Who is Invited:
Note that indicating "Going" on this event post does NOT register you for the program. Registration is required at the Friends of GCSNA Eventbrite link, above. Registration opens on Saturday two weeks prior to the event and closes at noon the Thursday before the event.
This activity is open to ages 5 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.
This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at [email protected] to schedule at a different time.
Where to Meet:
We'll start in the Exhibit Gallery (the screened structure right next to the Visitor Center) and take a short night hike. Lot A or B will have the closest parking. The parking lot and path to the Gallery are paved and near an accessible restroom. After a night sounds program and guessing game, we'll take a 0.5-1.0 mile hike on the Discovery Trail, which has a compacted crushed granite surface.
How to Prepare:
Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass (https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/reservations). Day passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit. Please note: reserving a Day Pass is not the same as making a program reservation! Make reservations at the Friends website as linked above before reserving day passes.
Dress for hiking outdoors. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 1 liter of water per person.
If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications by emailing [email protected] at least 2 weeks in advance.
Cancellation:
This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
