In this workshop, Shohret Nur will demonstrate the techniques of Uyghur dutar and elucidate the different approaches to artistry embodied by two master Uyghur musicians: Musajan Rozi and Abduréhim Héyt. Beginning with details of his own musical life in Kashgar, Shohret will explain how the techniques of these two masters represent the distinct ways of playing dutar in northern and southern Xinjiang, and how these diverse sounds are attached to the peoples across this vast and culturally diverse region. With specific examples, he will analyze details of pieces in the region’s repertoire and provide deeper insight for audiences interested in the music of Central Asia.
This event welcomes public participation with self-brought dutars. The speaker will teach hands-on techniques.
