soundance festival berlin 2023Das siebte soundance festival berlin vom 15.-18. Juni 2023 feiert an vier Abenden feine Nuancen, unverhoffte Wendungen und magische Momente im Hier und Jetzt von Tanz und Live-Musik. Musikalische Gesten treffen auf Choreografie, Strukturen der Notation verbinden Tanz und Musik, Ungewohntes wird hörbar, im Stimmklang öffnen sich filigrane Landschaften.
Unser neues Pilotformat soundance expanded im Dialog mit internationalen Berliner Tänzerchoreograf*innen richtet den Fokus auf ihre künstlerische Zusammenarbeit mit Musiker*innen in ihren eigenen choreografischen Werken. Am 12./13. Mai begleitet soundance expanded die Deutschland-Premiere der Duo-Performance Foreland - Bach and Britten des Tänzerchoreografen Nitsan Margaliot in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Amsterdamer Cellisten Isaac Lottman in der St. Matthäus-Kirche. Das soundance festival berlin 2023 ist eine Koproduktion von b.arts.u – berlin arts united und DOCK ART. DOCK ART wird gefördert durch die Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa.

Foreland – Bach und Britten ist die Wiederaufnahme einer Solotanzperformance des in Berlin lebenden Choreografen und Tänzers Nitsan Margaliot in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Amsterdamer Cellisten Isaac Lottman. Das Werk bringt Konzert und Choreografie in einen spannenden Dialog. Foreland verbindet die beiden Meisterwerke, Johann Sebastian Bach’s 5. Cellosuite und Benjamin Britten’s Suite 1, op. 72, mit einer virtuosen tänzerischen Interpretation, die der leidenschaftlichen und kraftvollen Musik körperlichen Ausdruck und Form verleiht.

GESTI – eine Trilogie

Die Trilogie GESTI (ital. Gesten) basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Werk von Luciano Berio für Altblockflöte solo (1966). Zwischen der Flötistin Mirjam-Luise Münzel und der Tänzerin Imola Nagy entspinnt sich eine intensive Dialogperformance, die beide Künstlerinnen Hand in Hand entwickeln. Die musikalischen Gesten des Stücks erhalten eine körperliche Ausdrucksebene, indem die Choreografie sich intensiv mit der Notation und den Strukturen dieses Werks beschäftigt. Die Tänzerin wird zum zweiten Ich der Musikerin und andersherum. Das Stück spielt mit dem Gefühl der Entfremdung und des „falling apart“: das Individuum ist so sehr von seinem inneren Fühlen entfremdet, dass es sich nicht mehr klar artikulieren kann und verzweifelt. Umrahmt wird GESTI von Tanzsätzen von J. S. Bach, improvisatorische Transitionsmomente verbinden die Elemente – eine Triologie entsteht.

Die Komponistin und Sängerin Maria Coma und die Choreografin und Tänzerin Naïma Mazic legen bei ihren ersten Begegnungen für das soundance festival gemeinsame Wurzeln frei, die sie in dis/harmonie miteinander teilen. Naïma hat Wege für Tänzer*innen und Musiker*innen entwickelt, um über eine gemeinsame polyrhythmische melodische Sprache zu denken und zu kommunizieren, und Marias Saat für Rooting sind ihre jüngsten Kompositionen, die über den menschlichen Körper als Instrument und Ursprung der Musikalität, insbesondere der Stimme, entstehen. Die Berührung kann verwickelt oder entwickelt geschehen, ihre individuellen Wurzeln kreuzen sich im selben Boden und Atem. In diesem Duett wird in jedem Moment etwas auf dem Feld des Unbekannten gepflanzt. Ein weiterer Weg, unter dem Mond zu improvisieren.

In ihrer Improvisation Wind up erkunden Maria Colusi, Roberta Ricci und Edgardo Rudnitzky die Idee der Zyklizität, dass alle Dinge als untrennbare und widersprüchliche Gegensätze oder Paare gleicher Gegensätze existieren, die sich anziehen und ergänzen. Weniger als „gegensätzliche Kräfte“, sondern vielmehr als „komplementäre Kräfte“, die ständig interagieren und nie in absoluter Stasis existieren. Der ständige Weg der Vereinigung von Gegensätzen und das Streben nach einem Gleichgewicht. Wo liegen der Anfang und das Ende der Wechselwirkung? Was verursacht sie?

As we drove short short horizon-lines ist eine Klangperformance, die sich zwischen Choreografie, mündlicher Poesie und Musik bewegt. Als lebendiges Gedicht mit vielen Stimmen, Sprachen, Instrumenten und Körpern gedacht, ist es ein intimes Stück: Es lädt das Publikum ein, den sensiblen Beugungen der geografischen und musikalischen Linien zu lauschen, die vom Nahen Osten über den Balkan bis nach Westeuropa führen. Auf diesen Linien, wo heterogene Gebiete eng aneinander grenzen, versucht das Stück, Unterschiede – seien es künstlerische oder kulturelle Ausdrucksformen – so zu artikulieren, dass sie nicht vermischt werden. Eine Art und Weise, die auch den so genannten Balkanrhythmen eigen ist, da sie osmanische und westeuropäische Einflüsse nebeneinander stellen, ohne sie zu Polyrhythmen zu verschmelzen, sondern indem sie kleine Brücken über riesige Gebirge schlagen.

The seventh soundance festival berlin from June 15-18, 2023 celebrates fine nuances, unexpected turns and magical moments in the here and now of dance and live music on four evenings. Musical gestures meet choreography, structures of notation connect dance and music, the unfamiliar becomes audible, filigree landscapes open up in the sound of voices.
Our new pilot format soundance expanded in dialogue with international Berlin dancer-choreographers focuses on their artistic collaboration with musicians in their own choreographic works.
On May 12/13, soundance expanded will accompany the German premiere of the duo performance Foreland - Bach and Britten by dancer-choreographer Nitsan Margaliot in collaboration with Amsterdam cellist Isaac Lottman at St. Matthew's Church.

Foreland – Bach and Britten is the resumption of a solo dance performance by Berlin-based choreographer and dancer Nitsan Margaliot in collaboration with Amsterdam cellist Isaac Lottman. The work brings concerto and choreography into an exciting dialogue. Foreland combines the two masterpieces, Johann Sebastian Bach's 5th Cello Suite and Benjamin Britten's Suite 1, Op. 72, with a virtuosic dance interpretation that gives physical expression and form to the passionate and powerful music.

The trilogy GESTI (ital. gestures) is based on the work of the same name by Luciano Berio for alto blockflöte solo (1966). Between the flutist Mirjam-Luise Münzel and the dancer Imola Nagy an intensive dialogue performance develops, which both artists develop hand in hand.
The musical gestures of the piece are given a physical level of expression through the choreography’s intense engagement with the notation and structures of this work. The dancer becomes the second self of the musician and vice versa. The piece plays with the feeling of alienation and falling apart: the individual is so alienated from his or her inner feeling that it can no longer articulate itself clearly and despairs. GESTI is framed by dance movements by J. S. Bach, improvisational transitional moments connect the elements – a triology emerges.

Composer/ singer Maria Coma and choreographer/ dancer Naïma Mazic are uncovering shared roots in their first few encounters for soundance festival being in concert with each other. Naïma has been developing pathways for dancers and musicians to think and communicate through a common polyrhythmic melodic language and Maria’s seeds for „Rooting“ are her most recent compositions that emerge via the human body as the instrument and the origin of musicality, particularly the voice. The touch might happen entangled or untangled, their individual roots crossing in the same soil and breaths. In this duet, each moment something will be planted in the field of the unknown. Another way to improvise under the moon.

In their improvisation Wind up, Maria Colusi, Roberta Ricci and Edgardo Rudnitzky explore about the idea of cyclicality, that all things exist as inseparable and contradictory opposites or pairs of equal opposites that attract and complement each other. Less like “opposing forces”, and more “complimentary forces” which constantly interact, never existing in absolute stasis”. The constant path of uniting opposites and the pursuit of seeking balance. Where do the beginning and the end occur in the interaction? What causes them?

As we drove short short horizon-lines is a sonic performance that travels across choreography, oral poetry and music. Thought as a living poem with many voices, languages, instruments and bodies, it is an intimate piece: it invites the audience to « listen » to the sensitive inflections of geographic and musical lines that go from the Middle Eastern regions, across the Balkan mountains, to Western Europe. On such lines, where heterogeneous territories are closely adjacent to each other, the piece seeks to articulate differences – be they of artistic or cultural expressions – in a way that does not mix them. A way of doing that is also proper to the so-called Balkan rhythms as they juxtapose Ottoman and West-European influences, without blending them into polyrhythms, but rather by building small bridges across huge mountains.
