Doors open at 5 p.m.The Nature Conservancy in Connecticut and Yale School for the Environment are proud to present a screening of the documentary series “Tackling Pollution in Long Island Sound,” produced by the organizing partners of the Long Island Sound Coastal Watershed Network, including TNC, Citizens Campaign for the Environment and Save the Sound.
After four decades of dedicated protection efforts, the health of Long Island Sound has improved by leaps and bounds. Individuals and member organizations of the Network have contributed to those accomplishments through successful water pollution reduction projects over the past several years. The four-part series showcases collaborative projects that target and reduce different local sources of pollution entering the coastal waters of Long Island Sound:
Episode 1: Marine Debris explores the issue of physical debris, like the abandoned lobster traps that were left behind in the wake of Long Island Sound’s lobster population crash in the late 1990s.
Episode 2: Nitrogen delves into the impacts of nutrient pollution on coastal waters. Did you know that lawn fertilizers, sewage treatment facilities, and septic systems all play a role in water quality in Long Island Sound?
Episode 3: Bacteria & Pathogens showcases the work of an inter-state (CT and NY) program that monitors sources of bacteria and pathogens to improve the safety and quality of water entering Long Island Sound.
Episode 4: Nature-Based Solutions focuses on hands-on projects that integrate nature and engineering to enhance resilience, community placemaking, and slow or capture polluted storm water before it enters coastal waters.
So, what’s possible? Tune in to learn more about pollution in Long Island Sound and discover what you can do as a student, local resident, organization or supporter of our coastline. Plus, gain insight from scientists, experts, and civilians who are making positive strides toward a cleaner Long Island Sound. It’s all about pollution solutions!
