Sound Portraits is a series of listening sessions, performances, discussions, and demonstrations that explore the work of composers who are paving the way for contemporary electronic music. Each session is dedicated to the work of a different artist/project, and together we’ll listen to their work, talk with the artist about ideas behind the work, and watch small performances or demonstrations from each artist.
Frank Bretschneider is a musician, composer and video artist based in Berlin. His work is known for his precise sound placement, complex, interwoven rhythm structures and a minimal, flowing approach. Bretschneider’s subtle and detailed music is echoed by his visuals: perfectly translated realizations of the qualities found in music within visual phenomena. In 1986, after establishing his cassette label klangFarBe, Bretschneider founded AG Geige, an influential East German underground band. In 1996, Bretschneider co-founded the Rastermusic record label, later raster-noton. He releases his music and performs at music/media festivals worldwide.
