The history of Sound City and its huge recording device, the Neve 8028 analog mixing console. It follows former Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighter David Grohl in his directorial debut as he attempts to resurrect the studio back to former glories. "A must-see film for anyone who cares about recording techniques... ultimately SOUND CITY celebrates the human element in recording..."—BILLBOARD.
Some of the greatest rock artists of all time, including Nirvana, Kyuss, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Rick Springfield, Tom Petty, Rage Against the Machine, and Slipknot recorded groundbreaking music at the Sound City studio.
The film tells the story of the studio from its early days in 1969 until it stopped operating as a commercial studio in 2011 and covers the reasons for the studio's success along with the reasons for the distinct sound that came from the studio.
"…SOUND CITY has something for everyone. Whether you’re a music gearhead, a fan of the bands and albums recorded at Sound City, someone who appreciates the creative process behind writing and recording songs or even just someone who digs well-made documentaries, the film has it all. We know Dave Grohl is a great drummer and an incredible front man; now we know he’s a great documentary filmmaker too."—FILM THREAT
