The Block Party is an event that's rooted in a need for the community. As covid continues to plague the world, a lot of change has happened. One of these being the cancelation of many events that are staples in Austin. In 2019(2020) the Pecan street festival was canceled causing a lot of small business owners, artists, vendors and the community to miss out on tradition. We saw a need after learning about how many people were left without a plan b at the unexpected cancellation. Funds that could've been used to provide for their families and/or continue to grow their business. Along with that, the east side of Austin is constantly changing. There is a disconnect between the people who have been there for years and the new transplants. Together Rich’s Art Gallery, Mira Mira, Thicc Mamis, Flowmagin, Grub and Hip Hop, Frida Friday, Color Cartel, Good Pop and other volunteers created what is now known as the block party.
This month would be the second adaptation of the festival. We want to continue to amplify the culture of East Austin and cultivate Community through art and civic engagement while raising awareness around the needs of the community. There is so much history, culture, and talent hidden in Austin. We are providing opportunities for people to connect, be immersive, and celebrate our city. From public art exhibits and musical performances to makers market and fundraisers, we will provide a space that combines the past and future of our “weird” city.
