About this Event
The renowned concert pianist Claudette Sorel was a pioneer in advancing women in music in the 50s through the 70s, She was also a National Arts Club member, and left a bequest to the Club. Thanks to this generous endowment from the Sorel Organization, the National Arts Club continues her vision of empowering women in music.
In honor of Sorel's legacy, The National Arts Club has invited Jessie Montgomery, one of the most in-demand composers of our time. The GRAMMY-winning composer, violinist, and educator’s calendar is packed with commissions and performances by major orchestras and ensembles, and the New York Philharmonic will premiere her new work April 9-11.
On April 8 at the NAC’s Sorel Award Concert, Montgomery will receive the Sorel Medallion Award in recognition for her artistry and cultural contributions. In addition to performances of her chamber music, Montgomery will discuss her career journey and pay tribute to the Third Street Music School on the Lower East Side, where she began her studies as a child. Third Street is celebrating its 130th anniversary as the longest running community music school in the U.S.
