About
Nicolás Jaar, 34, was born in New York to Chilean parents and raised between Santiago and New York. Since 2008, he has released music under various guises spanning shades of pop, ambient, noise, and club music. Since 2013, he has curated the Other People label. In 2019, Jaar assembled the Shock Forest Group, a collective which has been exploring the myriad layers of colonial, ecological and institutional violence that interlink on the site of a forest built to be bombed in Zandaam, NL. In recent years, he has mainly focused on education, teaching sound-editing and listening workshops to emerging musicians and non-musicians alike in the aforementioned studio and various institutions. His latest project is called ‘Archivos de Radio Piedras’, a 3.5 hours long radio play in Spanish set in the near future. In early 2024, his debut collection of stories ‘Isole’ was released by the Italian publishing house Timeo.
SONICA Festival
SONICA is a Ljubljana-based music festival that champions diverse niche trajectories in contemporary music — experimental, electronic, modern classical, avantgarde and transgenre — and sound art. The festival consists of concerts, club nights, production and research residencies, exhibitions, public interventions, presentations and talks. Though focused on the international music scene, it lays emphasis on the Balkan region and Eastern Europe. Apart from the annual edition in Ljubljana, SONICA has organised various editions in London, Wroclaw, Trieste, Venice, Wien, Berlin, Zagreb and Belgrade.
