Songwriters@Scup is a monthly "songwriters in the round" event, sponsored by Mark Dillon and Doug Baker and hosted by Scuppernong Books. It's January, you say? It must be time for the annual appearance by Tim, William, and Jack, the Piano Guys!
Tim Smith is a versatile musician who plays many types of music in bands from contra dance music to country honkytonk and rock and roll. One of the better kept secrets is that Tim also writes clever thoughtful and original songs, which will be on display at this show. He released his first solo album, Participating At Last, in 2023.
It’s no secret that William Nesmith’s got a passion for crafting pop hits. From inspiring ballads to bubbly bops, he uses his impressive vocal range and unique registers to paint a spectrum of emotions. William is a Carolina native, MBA grad and classically trained pianist. His music comes from a real place, full of true experiences and raw feelings. He seems to evoke an enduring optimism—even in his darkest songs while taking listeners on a ride they’ll never want to get off.
Jack Gorham’s music frequently draws comparisons to artists whose styles are as far flung as Billy Joel and Randy Newman to the poetic likes of Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits. Whether it is a sweet love song, a bluesy, toe tapping romp or a contemplative musing about time and the human condition, it is readily apparent that at the heart of Gorham’s work is a desire to communicate ideas and emotions directly to the willing listener. His words and melodies work hand in hand to transplant audiences to the world Gorham creates. It is not uncommon for Jack to riff on the origins of his songs, giving insights into the inner workings of his storytelling process before the first note is played. Other times he moves swiftly from song to song leaving interpretations entirely up to the listeners. However the music is presented, those in attendance of a Jack Gorham performance are touched in some way and often leave with a new perspective after the experience.
