AYC presents the next installment of Songwriters in the Round series and boy are we in for a rare treat…get here early for a seat!
We’re so excited to bring our elusive buddy Brian back to the AYC stage. Brian Bowen has been making waves along the Forgotten Coast since 2009. From small venues to large festivals, he brings his salty Americana songs to life through matter-of-fact delivery. Humorous, vivid and oftentimes gritty, he weaves tales of love lost and found, the fragile ecosystem of the Apalachicola river and bay, and the people who make their living there. His style has been likened to that of Robert Earl Keen, Jerry Jeff Walker, John Prine and Guy Clark, to name a few.
AND, someone who needs no introduction, the one and only Del Suggs!!!!! Del Suggs is a singer/songwriter and guitarist from the beaches of North Florida. He has appeared in concert at colleges, universities and festivals across the United States and the Caribbean. Del has appeared at over 700 colleges and universities across the US. He's also performed at such prestigious venues as the World Music Festa (Shirahama, Japan), Kerrville Folk Festival (TX), Spirit Square (NC), Lyric Theatre (FL), Sarasota Opera House (FL). Del has appeared at the Florida Folk Festival every year since 1983. In 2016, "Campus Activities" magazine named Del one of the "Top Five Artists of the past 25 years," an honor recognizing his lengthy career and continuing popularity. Del is considered by many to be one of the founders and pioneers of "Trop Rock" (tropical rock) music. This popular genre is rightfully credited to Jimmy Buffett. Del began to perform in a similar style which he called "Saltwater Music," drawing on his experiences growing up along the Gulf Coast in Panama City, Florida. His songs have been covered by other trop rock artists such as John Reno ("Magic Chair," "Break in the Weather," and "Billy" co-written with Pierce Pettis), and other recording artists Carol Ann Mathews, Tammerlin, and more.
Clayton Mathis, our fearless leader, is no stranger to the AYC stage! Clayton Mathis was born and raised in Gaffney, SC in the small community of Goucher. While there, he attended Thickety Creek University where he learned proper fence building techniques, the art of bovine castration, cat fishing 101, tree identification, and was surrounded by some of the finest gospel music imaginable at one of the small community churches where he developed his love for music. His grandmother taught him piano until he quit at the age of 12. He tried guitar lessons around the age of 15, but couldn’t seem to grasp the technique of “practice”. There’s a large gap in between these times where his whereabouts were unknown. Mostly traveling the cosmos(as he says), he listened to every genre of music imaginable. From Ernest Tubb to Wu-Tang Clan to Guns N Roses to Thievery Corporation. He re-surfaced sometime around the year 2013 in the small town of Apalachicola. There, he was so inspired by his surroundings he decided to pick up the guitar again. He weaves around topics such as religion, politics, unanswered questions, relationships, drinking, love, and family. He had the privilege of having his brother produce his debut album in 2020 titled Welcome to the In Between in Columbia, SC. His most recent influences would be his brother, Townes Van Zandt, Colter Wall, Sturgill Simpson, and Drive By Truckers. You may find him slugging back beers and strumming on a guitar on a corner or in one of the local bars in his hometown of Apalachicola, Florida.
