Songwriters & Strings, created by Natalie Williams Calhoun and featuring three PEI artists, will welcome you to an evening of beautiful music, creativity and community at St. Paul’s Church on October 25, 2024.
The performance will feature Tiffany Liu, Emilea May and Alicia Toner, accompanied by a 10 piece string ensemble, with custom arrangements written by Natalie Williams Calhoun, in this one night only special event. This performance has been generously supported by Innovation PEI, through their PEI Arts Grants Program. Tickets will be $45 and will be available for purchase online or at the door.
Originally from China, Tiffany Liu is an accomplished Pipa player with over two decades of dedicated practice and performance experience. Her passion for the Pipa led her to Canada in 2016, where she introduced this ancient instrument to diverse audiences on Prince Edward Island. Recognized for her musical contributions, Tiffany received a PEI Provincial Arts Grant in 2022, enabling her to create her debut album ‘Riding the Waves’ which was then nominated for a Music PEI award as well as an East Coast Music Award. Tiffany Liu embodies the essence of a global musician, bridging cultures through her artistry. With an open heart and an unwavering spirit of exploration, she aims to share the beauty of the Pipa and Asian music culture with a global audience, fostering cultural exchanges and transcending boundaries through her music.
Emilea May is a Prince Edward Island based songstress known for crafting music that serves as a catalyst for healing and growth through raw expression. With her dreamy vocals and honest lyrics, her music provokes deep-feeling and introspection. Drawing inspiration from artists like Lizzy McAlpine and Madison Cunningham, she weaves tales inspired by the mysteries of creation, the intricacies of human connection and the transformative journey of motherhood. Her forthcoming debut album, ‘Unwreck Me’, has an indie/pop/rock feel and delves deep into heartache, heaviness and holding onto hope. In her short time performing live, Emilea has shared the stage with artists such as Basia Bulat, The East Pointers, Rose Cousins and Tim Baker.
Alicia Toner is a multi award-winning singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from the East Coast of Canada. Her latest album, ‘Joan’, was released in June 2021 and was nominated for two East Coast Music Awards (Rising Star and Solo Recording of the Year) and won Solo Artist of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Alicia is also the Artist in Residence at the Under the Spire Music Festival for the 2024 season.
Songwriters & Strings will be presented in the beautiful acoustics of St. Paul’s Church on Friday, October 25th at 7:30pm.
