Songs in the Key of Resistance Social Movement Music, both old and new
Movement Song Circle, Saturday October 5, 2024 4-6pm
First Presbyterian Church of Beacon, 50 Liberty St. Beacon, NY
Come sing with us! Join cultural arts leaders from the The Kairos Center for Religions, Rights and Social Justice and the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival for a “Songs in the Key of Resistance” (SKOR) song circle, Saturday October 5, 2024 at the First Presbyterian Church of Beacon. SKOR draws on a rich history of social movement music, both old and new. From Spirituals to Labor songs, from Freedom Songs of the Civil Rights Movement to the music rising up from our struggles today, this compilation of movement music is meant to give people ways to join. To remember. To affirm. To honor. To rage. To celebrate. To practice new ways of being in relationship with one another and the earth. To envision and create a world that is just and habitable for future generations.
In times like these, it’s more important than ever to connect with our community and organize toward mutual care and solidarity. Please join us to learn how the practice of raising our voices together enables us to honor our pasts, learn from one another, and collectively envision a just society where Everybody’s Got a Right to Live.
With song leaders: Dr. Charon Hribar, Director of Cultural Strategies (Kairos Center) and Co-Director of Theomusicology and Movement Arts (Poor People’s Campaign) and Ciara Taylor, Cultural Strategies Organizer and Educator (Kairos Center)
