About this Event

George and Ruth: Songs and Letters of the Spanish Civil War, is a two hander play of theinternational struggle against fascism leading up to World War II. Told through George Watt’sletters from the Lincoln Battalion in Spain to his wife Ruth (read by his son, Dan Lynn Watt) andletters to George from Ruth, an organizer in New York (read by Molly Lynn Watt). The lettersreveal their passionate love for each other and the antifascist cause.

Songs of the era originally curated by Tony Saletan, performed by George Watt’s son, SteveWatt, and bilingual singer songwriter Dean Stevens, provide historical and cultural perspectiveon the war and the politics of the period. You’ll be there, singing along on choruses of bravado, sorrow and humor.

Molly and Dan Lynn Watt, have presented this program to enthusiastic audiences at manyvenues over the past 20 years. They performed an earlier version of this play at CommunityChurch of Boston once before, and presented several Sunday programs at CCB over the years.Last fall they traveled to Spain for the first time and visited some of the battlefields Georgewrote about in his letters. Molly and Dan are retired educators and life-long social activists.Molly’s book, On Wings of Song, A Journey into the Civil Rights Era, is a memoir in poems. Dan’sbook is History Lessons: A Memoir of Growing Up in an American Communist Family.

Dean Stevens is a musician, Spanish interpreter, Central America traveler, and a long-time member of Community Church. He's currently their Interim Administrator and an avid CCB preservationist.

Stevie Watts is an award winning keyboard player and one of the UK's most sought after Hammond organists and pianists who can be seen performing and touring with great artists including Wille & The Bandits, True Strays, Connor Selby among others as well as leading his own band the Stevie Watts Organ Trio.
