About this Event
SongRise Improv Choir is for singers with basic skills in rhythm and pitch who want to step outside the box and join a welcoming circle of like-minded vocal explorers! There are no songs to learn—everything is improvised in the moment.
Laurel Murphy is your guide, leading the group in warmups and guided voice explorations, then composing wordless grooves, rhythms and harmonies for you to sing. Standing in a circle, stepping in time, we tune into each other, singing layered vocal parts and rhythms from jazz to blues to world depending on the mood.
You don’t need experience with improvisation—just your voice, your curiosity, and a willingness to try something new. You will sharpen your ears, deepen your listening and be amazed at the music we create out of nothing.
SongRIse really is about being in the moment and making warm-hearted connections through music.
This free event only happens once or twice a year, in a beautiful hall in Kitsilano. You’re also warmly invited to join any of the weekly SongRise Improv Choir sessions, running Tuesday evenings in Kitsilano starting February 3. *Bring drinking water.
