What is Son?
Son is the primary rhythm driving the sound of Salsa, and itself is a genre of music and dance that originated in the highlands of eastern Cuba during the late 19th century. It is a syncretic genre that blends elements of Spanish and African origin.
Son Cubano dancing and timing is the oldest and most traditional partner style associated with Salsa, with a timing (Contratiempo) similar to modern-day on2 but with a different feel at the same time. All Salsa dancers regardless of their chosen style (Cuban, On2, On1) can benefit from learning at least the basics of Son Cubano, as many of the modern day turns and figures are derived from this genre.
Aside from this, Son workshop will be taught without counts and with direct interaction with the percussion. (You’ll learn how your steps in contratiempo are related to the clave, congas, bongos, bassline…), which is particularly useful for students to develop better rhythm and ear.
