Something Blue
Alanna & Old Hat reimagines Joni Mitchell’s ‘Blue’
Alanna & Old Hat are a highly acclaimed Melbourne Swing quintet that brings to life the golden era of classic jazz from the 1920’s – 40’s transporting audiences to roaring twenties’ flappers’ speakeasies through the joie de vivre of vintage dance music, the romance of timeless jazz ballads; and the hot swing of sweet and soulful New Orleans’ blues.

Led by the velvet voiced Alanna Egan, whose influences include Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Julie London and many more, the band features world renowned pianist Steve Grant, swing guitar stylist Jen Hawley, violin virtuoso Hope Csutoros and mistress of the deep Jo To on double bass. Alanna Egan is also an award winning singer- songwriter known for her deeply expressive story telling in her twin sister folk act Alanna and Alicia. Her original songs weave folk, jazz and blues into a uniquely heartfelt sound.

In Something Blue, Alanna & Old Hat bring their signature vintage jazz sound to Joni Mitchell’s ‘Blue’ (1971), an album Rolling Stone hails as the greatest of all time by a female artist. Experience Mitchell’s beloved masterpiece through a new lens, where swing, blues, and classic jazz intertwine with the poetic introspection of this iconic singer-songwriter.

‘Alanna’s vocals are absolutely flawless… Alanna is ready to take a place amongst them all. In fact, I believe that she is a worthy successor to the crown laid down by Blossom Dearie when she left us.’
Alan Edwards (Musical Australiana) 98.3 OKR-FM

‘I envy Alanna’s patter – never seen such a dry, incisive and self-deprecating wit wrapped around an incredible talent. There’s plastic jazz with the same rotation of divas and the odd exceptional soloist, but she makes everything her own.’
