Somatic exercise goes against what we typically think of as exercise. There is no cardio, no strengthening, and nothing is done with speed. Instead, somatic exercise focuses on deliberate, slow, controlled movement with a focus on feeling the sensation within your body.Think of your sore, tight, contracted muscles like a knotted rope. When the ends of the rope are pulled in opposite directions, the knot in the centre become tighter, harder to undo. When the rope is gently moved towards the knot, towards the centre, the knot will begin loosen, allowing it to eventually come undone completely, restoring the rope to its original shape and function. This is essentially what we do in somatic exercise, move our muscles in the direction of ease, to allow the contraction to release and improve movement!
Class is done mostly laying on the mat, so you need to be able to get down to the floor.
