Discovery Green invites visitors to interact with the newest art installation, Solstice, by Studio Iregular, from Nov. 11, 2022 through Feb. 14, 2023 on the Brown Promenade.
The piece, commissioned by the Discovery Green Conservancy, places the audience in a space of ever-changing colors and soundscapes created by frames, mirrors, and a central sun.
Solstice is comprised of a series of mirrored and LED arches that reflect the transformation of Earth when the sun is at its closest and furthest from the equator. Guests will be able to experience the longest day of the year to the shortest in an explorative and interactive format.
The explorative experience invites the audience to stroll inside the space as the frames change colors at dusk or dawn. Guests can also choose to change the speed and direction of the sun, influencing the sound and color.
Solstice was designed for Discovery Green’s 15th anniversary celebration and supported by a grant from The Brown Foundation, Inc. It is on view daily during park hours, 6 am to 11 pm
A full schedule of public art programming sponsored by PNC Bank will provide visitors hands-on educational opportunities through family art workshops, and art experiences such as dance performances, a candle-lit labyrinth walk accompanied by a winter solstice sound bath, and a Lunar New Year Celebration.

Lights and Lanterns
Saturday, Nov 12, 1 - 2:30 pm
The shortest day of the year and the longest night, the winter solstice, is a time to celebrate the birth of light. In countries around the world this is done with lantern festivals. Children will learn about the tradition with a reading and a lantern-making workshop using plastic cups, pipe cleaners, paint and battery tea light candles. This craft is curated by Listo Translating Services.
Tissue Paper Stained Glass
Saturday, Dec 10, 1 - 2:30 pm
Create a tissue paper stained “glass” craft inspired from the different colors of "sunlight" in the Solstice installation. The natural light will make these shine!!! This craft is curated by The Orange Show. Limit of 100 participants.
Sun Prints
Saturday, Jan. 14, 1 - 2:30 pm
Cyanotype printing, also known as sun printing, is a technique discovered in 1842 by scientist Sir John Herschel. Chemically treated surfaces like paper or fabric are exposed to sunlight causing a chemical reaction that creates fascinating silhouettes on beautiful blue backgrounds. Pre-treated papers will be available, making this craft easy and safe for children. This week's craft is curated by Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Limit of 100 participants
LED Bracelets
Saturday, Feb. 11, 1 - 2:30 pm
Explore circuits and electrical energy while creating your own LED bracelet! Design a sun charm, then add an LED light powered by a coin cell battery to make your sun light up. This week's craft is curated by Girlstart. Limit of 100 participants.
