Celebrating the life and legacy of PVCC Art Professor, Gallery Director and Visual and Performing Arts Chair Beryl Solla: A Participatory Exhibition & Scholarship FundCurrently in place in the PVCC North Gallery, “Solla World” invites visitors to post poetry, quotes, photos, artwork or a memorial of their choice to “The Hailing and Wailing Wall for Beryl,” a display panel that spans the length of the gallery. Works made at home to share and add to the emerging collage are encouraged as the safest option due to COVID. For those who wish to create onsite (masks required), materials are available at nearby “make-it stations” in the form of brightly colored paper cut-outs of flowers and birds, both commonly seen in Solla’s artworks.
Nearby, notecards and a drop box collect memories and messages for Solla’s family, and artworks depicting Solla by artists Ashtin Bowman, Rose Guterbock and Rama Hughes hang. A table offers a place to leave flowers, an apt tribute to Solla given her love of gardening and bold colors.
A teacher who believed in the power of art to change lives and minds, the “Beryl Solla Scholarship Fund” honors Solla’s commitment to supporting students as they pursue their artistic and educational goals. One or more deserving student artists will receive financial assistance through annual scholarships of $500 each. Donations are being collected now at www.pvcc.edu/berylsollascholarship with the goal of implementing the first award in the fall of 2021.
The North Gallery is located in the V. Earl Dickinson Building at the south end of 501 College Drive. Masks are required to be worn on the PVCC campus and social distancing regulations should be followed.
