"... the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God... is how we start every new year by celebrating a feast of Mary, our mother, and the Mother of God. I sound like a broken record, but I can't think of a better way to begin a new year than by allowing our spiritual mother to help us focus our attention on her son, Jesus, as we set out for the adventure of a new year, with all its joys and challenges.
That's what Mary does. She helps us keep focus and our attention on the Lord Jesus. She is there for us to lean on to seek out her intercession in time of need. We can also implore her prayers for peace in our troubled world. Pope Saint Paul VI encouraged this celebration of the Mother of God on New Year's Day to focus on peace in the world during the 20th century, the most violent of all centuries. The current century is no less violent. May Mary, our mother and the Mother of God, intercede for us, her children, who need peace and consolation in the coming year...."
