Welcome to the Vegetable Growing & Dining Series 2025!


Commencing on Sun Feb 23 2025 at 2:00 pm in the beautiful Victorian Walled gardens of Festina Lente.

This enriching and practical culinary growing experience will run monthly throughout the year, introducing the first-time grower to producing seasonal veg throughout the growing season. This practical/theoretical experience will last for an hour followed by the opportunity to explore as a group - cuisine and tastings of a dishg relating to the the vegetable in seasonal focus.

Vegetables will include:

Potatoes,onions,cabbage,carrots,spinach/chards,beetroot,garlic,leeks,broccolii,salad leaves, turnip, tomatoes, peppers, courgettes/pumpkin, & corn.

Price : €75 for the entire 11 Month Series


Sunday 23rd February 25

Time: 2pm to 3:30pm

Potatoes

Looking at the different varieties to choose from we will discover the different growing methods, timings of planting and harvesting. We will also look at common problems for and how to get the most out of this very popular vegetable!

Cabbage

Looking at the different varieties for spring, summer and winter plantings, we will identify the different growing traits of this deliciousI rish vegetable.

From sowing to harvesting we learn plant care and pest and disease management.


Sunday April 20th

Time: 2pm to 3:30 pm

Carrots

This root crop can be avery rewarding to grow when... grown correctly! We look at the best ways to achieve optimum results. We also identify the major problems that can affect this crop from producing a good yield, soil conditions and preparation for sowing.


Sunday 18th May

Artichoke

Time: 2pm to 3:30 pm

This architectural perennial vegetable is a must for the vegetable garden - if space allows. We delve into Artichoke historically and identify best ways to grow, it's specific nutrition needs and successful ways to grow, whatever your garden site.


Sunday 22nd June

Time: 2pm to 3:30pm

Spinach / Chard


This prolific perpetual leafy vegetable is a must have in any vegetable garden, that will promise you an endless supply right throughout the lengthy growing garden calendar year.


Sunday 20th July

Time: 2pm to 3:30 pm

Beetroot

This root crop while sown a lot earlier in the season is such a versatile easy to grow crop that delivers a punch at this time of the growing and harvesting season throughout the summer. A must for any allotment, we look at how to get the most from this crop, the many varieties to choose from , its protection , harvesting and storeage.


Sunday 24th August

Time: 2pm to 3:30pm

Leek

A winter favourite while sown and planted out earlier in the season, this heart-warming winter favourite offers a great way of filling and utilising a lot of space in the winter allotment, providing you with leeks all throughout the winter months.


Sunday 21st September

Time: 2pm to 3:30pm

Onion / Garlic

As much as these two important crops are ready to harvest at this time of the year, it can also be a time to set to supply an early harvest the following year. We look at the different varieties how to grow from seed and more importantly onion set. We also identify the different varieties to choose from, how to set them in the soil and crop welfare.

Pest management, harvesting and storage are also included.


Sunday 20th October 25

Late / Early Sprouting Broccoli


This vegetable in the brassica family can offer a supply right through the year if space allows. An extremely versatile mainstay vegetable full of important vitamins and minerals wuth many culinary uses. We look at how to grow from seed, planting out, protecting and harvesting the crop.


Sunday 23rd November 25

Time: 2pm to 3:30pm

Turnip / Khol Rabi


An overlooked vegetable that has many uses in the kitchen - we will look at the different interesting varieties one can grow; how to sow in situ as well as sowing under cover and planting out.


Sunday 7th December

Brussel Sprouts / Parsnip


End of year seasonal favourites that supply winter warmth in flavour and versatility. We look at the right time to set these crops to harvest from winter right through to early spring. we identify how to maximise yield and flavour and create the perfect soil conditions.
