About this Event
About the workshop:
Learn about soil nutrient management as a vital aspect of soil health, for both agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability. This includes learning key biological, chemical, and physical principles of soil health, analyzing recent soil nutrient tests by using case studies, and gaining knowledge on practices specific to the needs of southern Vancouver Island, enhancing crop yields and sustainability on local farms.
About the facilitator:
Matthew is a professional agrologist and trained soil scientist with over a decade of experience working in agriculture and forestry. He is also conducting PhD research at the University of Victoria on the environmental benefits and financial viability of various land care techniques at Sandown. Matthew holds a BSc in Global Resource Systems from the University of British Columbia and an MSc in Earth and Environment from Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands where he focused on biological soil quality and ecosystem restoration. He has given workshops on soil health to community groups in the past and is excited to continue to share his passion for soil.
Who is this for?
New entrant farmers and intermediate farmers seeking more on-farm practical applications of regenerative agriculture.
What skills will I gain?

- Nutrient Management Practices: Explore various methods of nutrient management, including organic amendments tailored to local soil conditions.
- Real-World Application: Analyze recent soil nutrient tests conducted at the Sandown Centre for Regenerative Agriculture to understand soil health in practice.
- Hands-On Techniques: Apply nutrient management strategies to improve soil fertility and agricultural productivity, with a focus on environmental sustainability.
- Local Focus: Gain knowledge of practices specific to the needs of southern Vancouver Island, enhancing crop yields and sustainability on local farms.
What will we be doing?
- Interactive Presentation: Engage in discussion about soil health principles, focusing on nutrient cycling and management.
- Real-World Data Analysis: Analyze soil test results from Sandown Centre and develop nutrient management plans.
- Facilitated Discussion: Share experiences and challenges in nutrient management, gaining practical insights from peers.
