Social Justice Book Group will discuss books related to a topic of local, national, or international importance. A librarian will introduce a featured book on the subject. The topic for November, Native American Heritage Month, is Indigenous Justice Issues: sovereignty, land back, reparations, respectful representation, and stolen sisters. Criminal justice reform, environmental stewardship, colonial legacy. The featured book is Whiskey Tender: A Memoir by Deborah Jackson Taffa. Raised in Navajo territory in New Mexico, Taffa reflects on tribal identity, the criminalization of Native men, governmental assimilation policies, the Red Power movement, and resisting systemic oppression.
Book group members don’t necessarily have to read the featured book. They are encouraged to contribute by discussing a book on the topic they have read or sharing their experience or curiosity about the topic.
