We are proud to welcome Dog Daisies back to Clitheroe their album launch show at Bowland Bikes!
Dog Daisies is a widescreen indie-pop group based around the home-studio adventures of songwriter Stephen Hudson.
Inspired by midnight walks, motorways and the Lancashire coast, the band have released a flurry of cinematic, lyrical records earning them airplay on BBC 6 Music and supports for bands such as The Bug Club, Divorce, Katy J Pearson and The Lovely Eggs.
They return this Spring with their latest album: Reclaim, due for release on Sheffield indie label Bingo Records and the follow up to 2021’s Moonbathing.
It sets Ste’s characteristic storytelling lyricism to the backdrop of the Fylde Coast and asks the question: “How can you reclaim your spirit when it has been eroded by death, politics, hostile change, and the weather?”
Across eleven tracks, Reclaim explores this question through the themes of silt, coastal geology, what Ste terms ‘human geology’ and grief of various kinds; a mix which collides together in evocative, lucid yet shifting ways.
Ste says: ‘I come from a line of grumpy old men, and whilst writing this album, I had a lot of fun exploring my own inner grumpy old man. The people in these songs are in a constant tug of war between the best and worst of themselves and I felt like the coast was a natural backdrop for this to take place in.’
Writing contributions from live band members Katy Thomas, Tom Mellors and former drummer Joel Maudsley make this the most collaborative Dog Daisies album yet.
Leading single Holiday sets the tone with an insistent keyboard figure and pretty synth line that builds exponentially outwards into a bittersweet rush of drums, guitars, vocals and horns.
Piano features heavily as a primary song-writing tool, with much of the album taking a contemplative tone, though with plenty of swelling moments where the band cranks it up a notch.
The work of Morecambe-based painter and multimedia artist Ingrid Christie, as well as the geological survey maps of William Smith also provided visual inspiration for the songs to take shape in.
The result is a poignant mix of classic-sounding alt-rock, melancholy pop and country-tinged torch songs that span the full range of emotions for fans of Elliott Smith, Songs:Ohia, and Spoon.
Reclaim is released April 18th on Bingo Records and is preceded by the single Holiday out February 18th.
