Midlands-based artist David Troughton (b.Coventry 1951) was a ten year old living in Willenhall Wood in Coventry when he first discovered his love of American culture and the phenomena of space travel, two enduring themes which still drive his work today.
David says; 'I remember often playing ‘cowboys and indians’ in the woods. I was amazed at Yuri Gagarins ‘first human to orbit of the earth’ flight. I thought Dan Dare and all the other space stories were now within the realms of possibility. It seemed significant.
Eight years later I was awestruck by watching a human step onto the lunar surface. Somehow my interest in these events was visual rather than scientific. I was drawn to the images and the otherness of it all."
Having exhibited across the UK and internationally, David is now bringing his work back home to the city of his birth with his exhibition So Far… at The LTB Showrooms, a community exhibition and events facility occupying the ex-Litten Tree pub in Coventry’s city centre.
There are two threads within David’s work; paintings which are representational in nature, and mixed-media artworks referencing collaging traditions used by artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. David creates intriguing yet finely balanced canvases, paying both homage and wonder to the images from the vast library that he has amassed over the decades, collected from old school science books, old National Geographic magazines, charity shop books, comic annuals, newspapers and magazines both old and contemporary.
So Far… will feature a selection of brand new works, including paintings of uncanny motels illuminated by eerie light at night, and collage pieces on steel surfaces and other new materials, all of which will be shown alongside a selection of existing archive works stretching across David’s career.
Other features in the exhibition include a projected display of visuals from David’s archive of collected imagery. and there will also be a chance to see the artist at work as he will be painting live during the weekend opening hours of the exhibition.
About David Troughton
David Troughton has exhibited internationally in New York and Amsterdam, and has exhibited widely across the UK from Glasgow, to London to the Kent Coast including Margate and Whitestable.
He has works in many private collections and has also been commissioned for private, public and corporate projects. He is also a set designer for the drama department of King Edward VI in Stratford Upon Avon where he creates the sets himself.
David, and his wife Monica, who was an actress at the Belgrade Theatre, both have a rich history of being part of the cultural fabric of Coventry.
David attended Coventry College of Art and later went on to teach art at Bishop Ullathorne School, where he met Monica, and where he taught Turner Prize nominee George Shaw. With a love of music which almost parallels his love of art, he was friends with The Specials and printed the band’s first ever T-shirts and 2tone polo shirts to sell at their gigs.
David now lives in Stratford Upon Avon and was an arts mentor to the late actor Sir Anthony Sher who described David as “an original and mesmeric artist.”
