𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗳𝗹𝗮𝗸𝗲?
This is Libertyville's 4th Annual Snowflake event (in this iteration!). LHS student leaders wanted to bring together middle school students to celebrate and inspire healthy living. Snowflake is a program specifically for middle students featured in many communities throughout the state of Illinois. It's the younger version of Operation Snowball, a program that has existed in Illinois since the 1980s.
The purpose of Snowflake is to build a healthier community through peer mentoring and bringing together students from all of Libertyville High School's feeder schools.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗳𝗹𝗮𝗸𝗲?
First, we want all students to have a really fun and bonding experience. Students will be in small groups of mixed 7th and 8th graders, led by two or three high school leaders who will guide them through the evening. This year's event will feature both large and small group activities that include music, dancing, and small group discussion.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲, 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆𝘀? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻?
Our Snowflake student directors want to help middle school students reflect on what a healthy journey means to them. Student speakers will focus on this as well. They'll share what they've learned about the value of positive lifestyle choices relative to substance use, sleep, time management, social media use, and friendship.
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗿?
Snowflake is a prevention program, not a form of therapeutic intervention. Adults will be present, but it is primarily led by high school students. If your child is currently having difficulty with emotion and behavior regulation, consider how this might impact their experience in a small group led by 16 and 17-year-olds. Similarly, we ask that your middle schooler not be forced to attend Snowflake.
If your child is shy, this is totally okay! Most likely, they will come out of their shell throughout the evening.
