The opening four notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, one of classical music's most recognizable motifs, were described by Beethoven as "fate knocking on the door." The journey through sorrow and struggle to victory that follows those opening four notes is absolutely magical. The program opens with Sibelius' Third Symphony, composed almost exactly 100 years after Beethoven's Fifth. Following Sibelius' first two expansive romantic symphonies, the Third is a good-natured, triumphal piece that harkens back to the clarity and Classical forms of Beethoven and Mozart.
