Join us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Burke-Gaffney Observatory with Dr. Vincent Henault-Brunet, Director of the Burke-Gaffney Observatory, and Dr. Marcin Sawicki, Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Astronomy, Faculty of Science.
Dr. Vincent Henault-Brunet will talk about the important role that the Burke-Gaffney Observatory plays at Saint Mary's and in the community. Dr. Marcin Sawicki will discuss his research on the James Webb Telescope and the Saint Mary’s University Astronomy program. A reception and group tours of the observatory will follow (weather permitting).
Dr. Vincent Hénault-Brunet is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Astronomy & Physics at Saint Mary's University, and he is also the Director of the Burke-Gaffney Observatory. His current research focuses on the dynamics of star clusters, in particular old globular clusters, and the black holes they contain.
Dr. Marcin Sawicki has been a member of the science team responsible for the Canadian contribution to the James Webb Telescope from early in the telescope’s development. The team’s made-in-Canada Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) instrument is a key part of the telescope.
