Starting at Barrow Bridge on the outskirts of Horwich, we will enjoy walking through the quaint former industrial village and follow in the footsteps of the original mill workers, as we stride up the ’63 Steps’ towards the West Pennine Moors. Here we stroll through the Smithills Estate via Walker Fold then gain height as we walk through the Northern Forest, the largest Woodland Trust site in England. From here we will cross over towards Rivington Pike via the local landmark ‘Two Lads cairns’ and the ornamental lakes within the terraced gardens. Our return will see us cross moorland and possibly some seriously boggy trails to the regional high point of Winter Hill at 340m asl and down along rocky trails to visit Delph Mill Reservoir (Known locally as the ‘Secret Reservoir’).
Our route will be approximately a 9 mile/ 15km circular route and with a total ascent of 1935ft / 590m, so be prepared to enjoy some hills. The terrain will be varied as will the historical sites we will move through.
We will walk this route at a moderate pace but will have a rest / lunch break enroute. Expected total time of 5.5 hours.
Well behaved, friendly (with other dogs and people), dogs are welcome (max. 2 per person), but please note we are likely to encounter livestock enroute. Dogs must be able to climb stiles or be lifted over them. If using retractable leads, please keep them short to avoid tripping up other participants. Children aged 10+ are also welcome.
As with all Abigail's Trails, this is a small-group guided walk led by a professional Mountain Leader - Clare will be leading this one. Spaces are limited and cost £15 per person.
