Join ASU's Desert Humanities Initiative for Smart Hiking with Hiking Shack instructor Jon Mincks and ASU's Professor .
Join the Desert Humanities Initiative for Smart Hiking with local Arizona Hiking Shack instructor Jon Mincks and Professor Ron Broglio who will provide an introduction as to how hiking attunes people to their surroundings, aids mental and physical health, and creates personal investment in the local environment. Mincks will provide basics of how to hike safely including maps, hydration and nutrition, things to enjoy and notice on hikes, (basics of flora and geology), as well as how to handle emergency situations.
All participants will receive Desert Feelz, a Desert Humanities professionally hand-crafted handbook of things to do in the desert and how to engage with the landscape. The book gives short reflections by philosophers, historians, and scientists, and is illustrated by nationally know artist Marina Zurkow.
Class size limits (usually 25-30 people) designed to allow a positive and focused experience for the most people possible within the instructor’s capacities.

Jonathan Mincks, WFR – Wilderness Skills & Safety Instructor
Jonathan Mincks is a Wilderness First Responder and instructor of wilderness self-reliance at AHS Rescue & The Arizona Hiking Shack. He teaches modern wilderness survival, outdoor recreation skills and emergency preparedness. His educational programs have garnered him praise from new enthusiasts and seasoned professionals alike.
Holding multiple certifications and distinctions in industry standards, Mincks is also a boondocks scholar* who has been exploring the backcountry since he was in diapers. His practical approach & experience are only rivaled by his infectious passion, broad knowledge and witty perspective on self-reliance that confounds the important nature of the subject. He turns survival into "serious fun" for those who work or play in the backcountry because, "in the end, it is a positive attitude that will prevail."
Mincks is a go-to consultant on national and regional TV, news and media concerning outdoor recreation and safety. He has worked in the outdoor industry for over 20 years on trail crews, as a guide, outfitter, medic, educator, and outreach specialist.
This event is the first in the fall series for Desert Experiences with The Institute of Humanities Research (IHR) Initiative. Desert Humanities provides environmental experiences with the desert Southwest. Its premise is that we understand, appreciate, and care about our environment through physical engagement and cultural framing. Desert Humanities provides frames or ways of seeing, thinking, and feeling about the desert and offers opportunities to immerse in the landscape and its textured histories.
