Smallmouth Sound Company Presents: Colin Cutler and Sunny Boy with Annie Stokes
Celebrate the premier of Northern Virginia's newest live music curation and artist services company with some incredible local and touring artists!
Colin Cutler (he/him) is a Greensboro, North Carolina-based singer-songwriter, folk musician, poet, and storyteller toting a banjo and guitar--but he cut his teeth in the western Loudoun scene a decade ago. Whether solo or with his band, Hot Pepper Jam, he is a wide-ranging performer whose musical roots draw from the breadth of American folk music—from Appalachian oldtime to blues to gospel to country to rock’n’roll—to form what No Depression has described as “one magnificent tapestry of roots music.”.
While his first few albums were directly inspired by his background in oldtime music, his most recent effort was even more ambitious and electric. Tarwater was inspired by both life and the earthy characters of Georgia author Flannery O'Connor, achieving "...a juke joint energy coursing through it and a humidity that seems to sweat out the sins and the booze that these characters are often soaked in” (Paste).
The 2022 Winner of the Susquehanna Folk Festival’s Emerging Artists Competition, the last couple years have seen Cutler playing across the Southeast, with appearances at Merlefest, Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival, the North Carolina Folk Festival, Antlers and Acorns Songwriters Festival, and the Carolina Bible Camp Bluegrass Festival.
Sunny Boy (he/they/she) is the brainchild of Mowgli Hassan, a northern Virginia-based music therapist, activist, and artist. Mowgli has been making music since age 16, when they were scouted by Simon Cowell during his quest to replicated One Direction's fame in the States. This early brush with fame kindled a deeper love of music. After experiencing the rush of touring, which included taking time off from high school, they attended Berklee College of Music, earning a degree in music therapy. These days, Mowgli can be seen building richly layered songs at community events in the northern Virginia area.
Annie Stokes (she/hers) is the founder of Smallmouth Sound Company, as well as a music educator and local and regional touring artist. After spending her twenties paying her dues to the fickle gods of the music industry, she finally managed to carve out her niche by investing deeply in her community and relationships. Smallmouth Sound Company was born out of a desire to share her knowledge with, and create spaces for, other artists - especially those who tend to be overlooked by the traditional music industry gatekeepers. Annie has released three full length albums and two EPs, and was the recipient of the 2021 WAMMIE for Best Americana/Country Album for her self-produced project "The One That Gets Away."
Smallmouth Sound Company is excited to be partnering with CRAFT, a family- and woman-owned community arts space in historic Downtown Leesburg.
