A Contact Improv Jam with a filmic score. A movie being projected large-style on the wall during the jam.
This time, we're going to dance to Tony Gatlif's Latcho Drom (1993), a french film about the Romani people's journey from north-west India to Spain. Like our last selection, Koyaanisqatsi, the film has INCREDIBLE music and minimal dialogue.
A couple more differences between this and a typical jam container:
Instead of treating every wall equally, we'll have more of an audience/stage orientation, so when you stop dancing to witness, you move to the audience side of the room. When you're on the stage side of the room, you're continuing to be responsible for your part of the ensemble. The purpose is to focus our attention and discover something gorgeous.
We will also hold a stricter line on conversation, keeping verbalization only to what is necessary for safety.
This event is not for beginner CI dancers! Everyone should be familiar with the norms for safety and consent at a CI jam so we can stay focused on the artsy-fartsy-ness of it all.
The movie will be projected onto the dancers to some degree, so wear light and neutral colored clothes if possible.
There will be an area for seating and some chairs, but you probably want to bring some kind of cushion for either your butt or your head or both.
