Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses nationwide. It is called Small Business Saturday. In 2024 Small Business Saturday will be celebrated on November 30th. American Express launched the first ever Shop Small Saturday in 2010 with the U.S. Senate unanimously passing a resolution recognizing Small Business Saturday in 2011. The Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce joined the movement as a neighborhood champion in 2010 and has been leading the way promoting Small Business Saturday for the Southport-Oak Island area ever since. As part of the Chamber’s ongoing efforts to support our small businesses, The Chamber will post an “Online Holiday Gift Guide” with great gift ideas and suggestions from your favorite local shops.
Cyber Monday is just behind Shop Small Saturday and The Chamber has a one stop shop for your online purchases from our local small businesses as well - online at www.shopsouthportoakisland.com .
Giving Tuesday reminds us that our local non-profit organizations struggle to meet the ever-increasing needs in our community. Consider a donation, drop off non-perishable foods at a local Food Drive or shop at one of the local non-profit thrift shops which support the missions of our local not-for-profit human service organizations. We urge you to become an active participant in Small Business Saturday so that all our area shops, restaurants and businesses can benefit. “Let’s light up social media by taking selfies at local small businesses on Saturday, November 30th with the hashtag #ShopSmall”, encouraged Karen Sphar, Executive Vice President of the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce. Sphar continued by saying “Shopping small is a year-round activity and we encourage you to Go Local throughout the year”.
