About this Event

At The ReDress Hub, we're here to help you on your journey to be more 'circular' with your clothing choices, avoid or reduce the consumption of fast-fashion, clothing and textile waste and basically, keep your clothes in use for longer.

This Slow Fashion Workshop is designed for intermediate to advanced sewists who want to practice and develop their skills in sewing to make collars, pockets and buttonholes in a warm and friendly social environment.

Held over an entire weekend, you will be able to focus and dedicate this time to not only learning new sewing skills, but meeting other like-minded people, sharing your creative energy with others and making this terrific jumpsuit to wear home!

The Slow Fashion INTERMEDIATE Sewing Series for ADULTS includes:

  • Day 1 (Sat 29th June, 10:00-1:00pm): Starting Construction: Pinning, interfacing and facings, and main seams
  • Day 1 (Sat 29th June, 2:00-6:00pm): Continuing Main Construction: Collar and front opening
  • Day 2 (Sun 30th June, 10:00-1:00pm): Starting Garment Finalisation: Button holes and belt
  • Day 2 (Sun 30th June, 2:00-6:00pm): Finishing : Sleeve insertion, hemming and/or casing

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is suitable for all intermediate to advanced sewists, over 18 years who have completed The ReDress Hub Slow Fashion Sewing Series for ADULT Beginners and/or are confident in making a basic garment. Skills include marking and cutting out a pattern as well as under-stitching facings.

***

What am I going to make?

We have selected a pattern suitable for intermediate sewists for you to develop the skills of collars, pockets, buttonholes and a tie belt.

For this series, we will be using a pattern for a jumpsuit - scroll down for pictures. This is a McCall’s Pattern M8243 Sizes 8 – 32 (with an adaption to hemmed sleeve, ie, no cuff) Misses’ / Women’s Jumpsuit and belt with front and back pockets, collar and button down front.

How do I book?

Choose the first date of the Series (Saturday 29th) and book selecting the Series Workshop ticket. This ticket is for both days.

What do I bring?

All materials (including your pattern) and equipment (including sewing machines) are supplied for this workshop except for your fabric (as we're pretty confident you'd like to choose your own style) and some additional notions, listed below. We will also supply you with a small notebook to write notes as you progress.

Pattern collection:

When you book, we will ask you to take some of your body measurements (so have a tape measure handy!) so we know what size pattern to supply. You will need to pick your pattern up from The ReDress Hub, at least a week before the workshop, so you have time to purchase your fabric and have the garment cut-out before Day 1, to give you the best chance to finish your garment by the end of the weekend.

Fabric purchase options:

You are encouraged to use retired, rescued and recycled fabrics.

We have a large range of beautiful upcycled and remnant fabrics at The ReDress Hub for you to choose from. You may like to check these out when you pick up your pattern and before you purchase material through traditional retail stores, as you may just find what you're looking for. You will find our fabrics are also very reasonably priced, generally between $3.50-8.00/m and you receive a further 50% discount as a workshop participant.

Generally, for this jumpsuit, you will need twill, denim, chambray weight fabrics. Retired doona covers and curtains are perfect, bed sheets are ok with mostly cotton fibre and still firm (not warped from use).

Made-up patchworks of retired favourite fabrics would look great, just make sure that the amount makes up the equivalent of 2.7 meters for a size 8 (80 cm bust / 61 cm waist), up to 3.8 meters for a size 32 (137 cm bust / 125 cm waist) at 150 cm wide fabric.

Notions:

  • 8 x 1.5 cm buttons (we also have a large selection of buttons at The ReDress Hub)
  • 2 x 3.2 cm 'D Rings' for belt.
  • Light to medium weight fusible interfacing 51cm wide, 0.8 meters for sizes 8 – 16 or 1 meter for sizes 18 – 32.

Sewing machine:

While The ReDress Hub has perfect sewing machines for your needs, you are also welcome to bring your own sewing machine to use in these workshops. Please let us know if this is something you'd like to do.

Food and drink:

We will supply hot beverages (tea and instant coffee), water and light snacks during the day.

A one-hour lunch break will be provided to recuperate your energy for the afternoon sessions. You will therefore need to either bring your lunch or enjoy one of the many local cafes and eateries surrounding The ReDress Hub. If you have special dietary needs, you are also encouraged to bring your own snacks.

Brigid Morrison started sewing as a teenager when she wanted clothes that she wasn’t allowed to buy, and later couldn’t afford to buy. Then op shopping became a better option and she and her friend trawled the op shops for finds, some of which are still cycling through her wardrobe today, 30-odd years later.

Later Brigid studied dress and pattern making at the Fremantle TAFE College and set about making handmade clothes for her children and family. After a change in direction, she completed her PhD in coastal geomorphology and now teaches Applied Technologies and sustainability-related topics at UTAS.

She is super keen to enhance her own lived experience of sustainability and help bring about an understanding of how a circular economy is something anyone can participate in by keeping clothes, textiles and other interesting stuff in use for longer.
