This concert pays tribute to queer pride anthems under the musical direction of Akenya featuring an all-star list of Chicago musicians & vocalists covering women-powered R&B, house, disco & pop at the iconic Jay Pritzker Pavilion. The show and will span hits from the seventies to today from Diana Ross to Robyn, journeying through a soundtrack intrinsically connected to LGBTQ+ culture and resiliency. R&B and folk influenced couple/duo Mermaid open and VITIGRRL will be getting the vibes going when doors open. It is free, all ages, and all are welcome to join in the groove and uplift Chicago’s LGBTQ+ legacy and influence.
This is the first LGBTQ+ centered program at Millennium Park to our knowledge, as well as our first in-person event since the pandemic, so please show up and show OUT for the historic occasion! We want to witness a sea of rainbows and gorgeous gays from the stage! Doors are at 5PM so pump through to get your perfect picnic spot or seat in the pavilion. The concert begins at 6PM SHARP.
We are taking submissions for photo memories capturing all the milestones during that pandemic that didn't receive a public honoring: Births, deaths, marriages, graduations and more. This is a moment to honor, mourn, celebrate and hold space together publicly as a community. Ifl you'd like your memory shared on the jumbotron screens at Millennium Park that night, please visit : https://forms.gle/DGtfZFifQ1mxnWBA8 for more details and to give your submission. Deadline is 7/28 to submit.
This event is presented by the City of Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Specials Events (DCASE) and is rain or shine, except in the case of extreme weather. Please contact [email protected] for accessibility needs including reserving a wheelchair accessible spot in the pavilion, or anything else. We will have volunteers on hand to assist. About Mermaid:
Couple duo Brittany Campbell and Candace Quarrels met while both starring in the Chicago production of “Hamilton: An American Musical”. Through this, they discovered the unique and almost blood-like harmonic way in which their voices combined. Sharing a love of old soul, folk and Rnb music, the two began to write music together (while simultaneously and unknowingly fall in lurvvv), thus Mermaid Band was born! Using music as a form of healing, Mermaid Band takes listeners on a heartfelt and spiritual ride. They are currently working on their debut album set for release early 2022. "Find Me'',their debut single , was hand picked by Brittany Howard (Alabama Shakes) as NPR's Tiny Desk TOP SHELF in 2020!
