8:30PM: @tawnibias Calgary, AB
Experimental trio Tawni Bias describes its sound as “noire-folktronica,” and that’s pretty apt. There’s a haunted singer-songwriter quality to the music from debut album SEL Fellow, but vocoder and other electronic manipulations warp the songs well beyond the confines of folk. Live, the band adds these warps in real time, adding another layer of dynamism to its sound.
9:30PM: @localsingles69 Calgary, AB
Experimental indie-pop septet Local Singles are a multi-vocalist collective of sonic explorers. Always weird, but strongly in favour of melody, their dreamy style of pop doesn’t sound like much else out there. The band’s lineup includes members of POSTNAMERS, Stucco, Gasperfrau and others.
10:30PM: @lovemauvey Vancouver, BC
MAUVEY’s explosive style of pop is influenced by Afro-fusion, fashion, cinema and unabashed love. In the last year, he performed at Glastonbury, released the second entry in his three-mixtape trilogy and played SXSW. Don’t worry if you’ve seen him before — he’s bringing a new version of his live show to Sled this year.
11:30PM: LUCY @cooperhardy Hadley, MA
Cooper B. Handy’s all-encompassing alias for his DIY experiments is LUCY, a Bandcamp hero amongst all Bandcamp bands. In a near-luddite approach, Handy plays with vocals, guitars, pianos, drum machines and a Web 2.0 aesthetic to amass a large catalogue of affecting music. Notably, he appears in the Boy Harsher film The Runner, as well as the band’s track “Autonomy.”
