MANCHESTER, NH – On Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, Slam Free Or Die - Poetry Open Mic & Slam continues its popular open mic poetry series at Stark Brewing Company. This week there will be an open mic followed by the Box of DOOM!! This event will be guest hosted by Adam Stone!!! Doors open at 7pm along with sign ups for the open mic. The show starts at 8pm. There is a $3-$5 cover (cash and Venmo) and this is an all-ages show. (*for more details on Slam Free or Die, scroll to the bottom of this description)
IMPORTANT: To give everyone a chance to be heard on the mic, we are asking poets to pick either the open mic OR the slam. Doing both events is prohibited. There are TEN slots for the slam that will be filled on a first come-first serve basis. If you do not make it in time to be in the slam, we highly encourage you to participate in our open mic portion! We strongly recommend getting to the venue earlier rather than later to get a spot on either list!
About the Slam:
While the true history of The Box Of Doom Slam has been deliberately obscured by embarrassed historians, Adam Stone first encountered the event at the 1999 National Poetry Slam in Chicago. Poets were encouraged to put their absolute worst poems in a box. The first performer of the evening drew a poem from the box, and a three minute stopwatch was started. The next performer was called to draw a poem as the first poet took the stage, and had only the length of the previous performance to familiarize themselves with the poem.
After a twelve year absence, Stone brought the event back for the 2011 National Poetry Slam in Cambridge, stocking the box with some of the worst poems and song lyrics he could find on The Internet, and in books that bragged about the worst poetry. Terrible rhymes, accidental misogyny, poorly conceived erotica, maudlin hamster eulogies.
There have been several iterations of the box since then popping up in slam venues and colleges all over North America.
Adam is a kinder, gentler creature now, and doesn’t wish you the pain of having to watch/listen to The Worst Literature Ever. Instead, he’s bringing a box filled with horrible song lyrics, poetic scripts that include stage directions, deliberately ridiculous poems to fill audiences with joy, and, ok probably also maudlin goldfish eulogies, poorly conceived erotica, and unintentional entendres. The performer’s challenge is to, in a short time frame, figure out a way to perform the poem in the way that will most delight the audience without cracking themselves up so much that people can’t understand them through the laughter.
