An incredible opportunity to explore the world of boatbuilding by hand! Modern Skin-on-Frame kayaks are based on centuries old proven boat building techniques, but with new technologies to make them ultralight and very strong. Students will learn to build a kayak frame using only lashing, mortise and tenons, and wooden pegs: no metal or glue! After the frame is done students learn to stretch and hand stitch the nylon skin onto the frame and seal it. The 7-day boat-building immersion focuses on using traditional hand tools and provides students a crash course on different wood species, how to read and understand wood, and key elements of sound construction. You will go home with your own, customized boat and the skills and knowledge to build your own kayaks in the future. This course is held on a private property in Nehalem, Oregon with a beautiful bay nearby. Lodging and meals are not included, however a limited number of options for camping will be provided by the host for an additional charge. This workshop will be held near Manzanita, Oregon. Additional details will be emailed to participants prior to the workshop. Some woodworking experience is helpful, but not necessary. Open to students 16 & up.
